JOHN WELSH
John Welsh of Hingham entered Radius with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and pneumonia.. He required intubation and mechanical ventilation. Unfortunately, once off the ventilator John's respiratory status continued to deteriorate. Given his advanced lung disease and weakness, the prognosis was guarded. Nonetheless, with the dedication and hard work of the Radius medical, pulmonary, rehabilitation and nursing team John's condition ultimately improved enabling him to return home to his large family of children and grandchildren.!

JAYNE DUNN
Jayne Dunn, from Plymouth became depressed with a shoulder injury and worsening back pain that left her unable to ambulate. Treatment in multiple facilities over a seven week period contributed to frustration without offering any hope that recovery was possible. Some thought that there was little hope that Jayne could return home. However, this 59 year old woman was not ready to give up, but needed a skilled and supportive team to help her help herself. With the assistance of skilled Radius rehab staff Jayne was able to push though her pain. Radius offered the right combination of skill and support harnessing her determination to get better and go home.

HUGH PORTER
Hugh Porter, age 77, a former construction worker and Army paratrooper was hospitalized on a ventilator for 6 months in his home town of Patten , Maine . He spent almost all his time in a lethargic state, induced largely by medications, and prospects for weaning off the ventilator grew dimmer with each passing day. In desperation, his family “surfed the Internet” for their own “Mission Impossible.” A promising “hit” landed them at Radius Specialty Hospital-Boston and its Ventilator Care Unit which specializes in weaning patients from long term mechanical ventilator support.

ROBERT HURT
Among a skilled group of rehabilitation staff who are dedicated to their patients, Robert Hurt stands out. His unwavering commitment to Radius' patients has earned him their deep gratitude and garnered the respect of his colleagues.
Mr. Hurt says a distinct philosophy guides his work as a physical therapy aide who treats a range of patients, from individuals recovering from a stroke to patients on ventilators. "I treat each patient as if they are my only patient, and I really focus on them," he explains. "It takes some psychology, but if you tune in and find out what it will take to truly help a person, most of the time you'll catch it."

BARBARA JORDAN
Boston resident Barbara Nemias was becoming increasingly concerned over the health of her mother, whose respiratory problems had required that she be on a ventilator in a New York skilled nursing facility for almost 19 months. She was eager to have her mother, Barbara Jordan, age 78, closer and was selected Radius for her care. She was worried about the daunting ambulance costs to transport her mother from New York to Massachusetts, but Radius Director of Admissions and Marketing, David Carvelli, RN was able to make it possible without her having to pay the out of pocket expense.

When South Weymouth resident Lois Keymont, 44, was admitted to South Shore Hospital for multiple health concerns, she couldn't have imagined the journey that would take her from the brink of death to a renewed sense of purpose and good health. AARON TEIXEIRA
"I was kind of done for – that's the long and short of it."
Boston resident Aaron Teixeira always has liked to be active, whether driving a school bus or snowplow, or caring for his nieces and nephews when his rheumatoid arthritis prevented him from working. “I was a caretaker for them, watching them, picking them up, always being with them,” he says.
So Mr. Teixeira, 55, was quite concerned when what he thought was the flu led to months of hospitalization. At Carney Hospital, he was diagnosed with pneumonia and polymyositis and stayed there for almost a month before being transferred to New England Medical Center for specialized treatment.

FLORIDA WHITE
Florida White is grateful to be where she is today. Despite having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), she lives in senior housing in West Roxbury and is able to enjoy shopping and lunch dates with her friends, as well as regular visits from her large and loving family. Her journey back from serious illness began six years ago.
